When you see Captain Crunch of the back of a box, the last thing you want to do is anylize his mustache or what he says. Instead you want to get to the good stuff and read how to get to the end of the maze or how to get your TRIX back from that damnbunny. In an essay, you may read the text three or four times to get the full meaning of it. This is what the aurthor of the essay wants from you. The creators of cerial boxs want to see something visually attractive that you only need to read/see once to enjoy.
Two others genres that differ from one another are Science Fiction and the Lucnh Menu. When one reads about science fiction, the first thing they would think about is aliens and teleporting. Then again, if you ask someone what is on the menu for lunch, you would not expect to get a responce back like, "Just some reactive slime."
